Escaping Catastrophe! Survival Strategies for Rehearsal and Project Space for the Independent Performing Arts

“The rent is increasing but we are not earning any more than before.” This sentence affects many Berliners, but members of the independent performing arts community are especially impacted as they see not only their living space placed at risk, but their working space as well, and with that their potential to realize new projects.

How can this vicious cycle of increasing costs and the resulting reduction of rehearsal times and production capacities? How can spaces continue to exist and sustainably maintain their infrastructures?

Participants:

Christoff Bleidt (Theaterhaus Mitte)
Aurora Kellermann (Performing Arts Programm)
Nicole Otte (LAFT Berlin)
Harry Sachs (ZK/U – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik)
Florian Schmidt (Studio commissioner for Berlin and head of the studio office in the Kulturwerk of the bbk berlin)
