Freie Szene - Die Modernisierung der Deutschen Theaterlandschaft (Independent Performing Arts Community – The Modernization of the German Theater Landscape)
Henning Fülle’s research analyzes the development of independent theater in West Germany for the first time from a source critical standpoint on the basis of concepts, self-conceptualizations and structures since the 1960s. “Independent groups”, “independent performing arts community" and “independent theater” are examined as historic forms of contemporary production methods, dramaturgy and aesthetics of theater. With the formation of these independent entities, a potential for innovation has come into existence that also makes it possible for German theater to overcome the burden of maintaining the tradition of bourgeoisie high culture. Together with its cultural-political significance, independent theater is a specific form of the late modernization of the German theater landscape that can be used in order to understand the international developments in the performing arts since the Second World War.
