Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich: Twilight of the Work – On the Erosion of the German Term "Werk"
The culture scholar Wolfgang Ullrich thinks further and more precisely than many others. He “is a brilliant writer and rhetorician.” (SWR, 2014) With (Habenwollen) “Want to Have”] (2008), he has written the best book on consumer culture to date: scholarly, but also clear and understandable and, most of all, gripping and moving. Just as moving is Des Geistes Gegenwart (The Present’s Spirit) 2014: a passionate, cheerful and well-founded plea for the humanities and for discourse between people.
With Twilight of the Work, the speech that he will give during the Industry Get-Together, Ullrich will approach the questions that the erosion of the term work raises for artists and for society.
Many works within the performing arts are not more or less ephemeral than works of visual art. The “experience” seems to replace a part of the art experience and thus also gives a portion of the authorship to the consumers. What does this mean for culture makers in society?
