Theater Making as a Course of Study and a Profession
Theater Making as a Course of Study and a Profession
Deutsche Bühnenverein, the German stage association, lists over 50 different theater professions. The labor market reality within the independent performing arts community, however, is usually quite different: “theater maker” continues to be an acceptable job designation which includes the diverse quali cations and competences of many people who make theater. When making theater independently, institutionally typical clearly structured work processes are replaced by collective and group structures which all feature mutually fluid theater makers. And that is what it is all about: theater, as well as dance and performance, have to be made. But how can you learn how to do that or teach others how to do that? The universities in Hildesheim and Gießen have been setting standards for years with contemporary interpretations of their courses of study which focus on practical work.
Wolfgang Schneider and Julia Speckmann have just published a new book on this topic which will be presented during this event and discussed together with teachers and former students. Institut für angewandte Theaterwissenschaften alumni and member of Monster Truck Sahar Rahimi and Georg Döcker, Scienti c Assistant at the Universität Gießen will discuss the situation at their institute.
