Call for Applications: pre.formance reloaded – Seminar Series for Newcomers

The seminar series will take place in English spoken language.

We are very pleased to be able offer the seminar series pre.formance reloaded for the fifth time! It is intended for English-speaking artists and culture makers who would like to begin working within Berlin’s independent performing arts community. Over the course of five seminars that build upon each other, we will illuminate, examine and investigate the individual steps from arriving at a new artistic process, the specifying of the first idea for a project through to networking and communication.
In the space for getting started (seminar A), we will focus on the foundations of your position toward yourself as an artist and culture maker, in the space for development (seminar B), ideas will be further developed with an eye toward funding applications and, in the space for economics (seminar C), financing opportunities and funding instruments will be identified. In the space for reflection (seminar D), some light will be shed on the topic of dealing with the highs and lows of everyday life as an artist and, in the space for possibilities (seminar E), strategies for networking will be discussed.
Within the series, the participants will be equipped with tools for actively bringing themselves into professional relationships, contexts and artistic processes in Berlin as artists and culture makers who are responsible for themselves.

The series is divided into 5 seminars, each of which is 8 hours long.

• Participation within the seminar series is free of charge and a certificate will be issued to all participants.
• The number of participants is limited to 12.
• You must agree to attend all five seminars in order to participate.

Seminar A
Space for Getting Started: Space for Arrival

This initial module has been conceived of as a “space for arrival”. No matter which way you have just arrived to Berlin’s independent performing arts community: this space provides insight into creative cycles in which you can self-responsibly take part in a manner that is honest, considered and healthy for you and/or poses questions to yourself and provide answers regarding how you would like to design this.

Space for Development: The Concept

We are dedicating ourselves to the concept - not only as the means to an end, the funding application or grant application, but also as a method for structuring and focusing one's own artistic work: what topics and motifs engage me and in which format, where and with whom do I want to engage with them? Using practical approaches to writing and presenting to each other, we will discuss in groups how an idea can be expressed in a concept* while reflecting our goals as artists at the same time.

*Each participant is asked to bring a project/a project idea.

Space for Economics: Resources

The artistic concept is ready. Now all that is missing are the financial resources to realize the project. What should be kept in mind when putting together a budget? How do I calculate fees, what taxes and duties are relevant and how does the Bundesreisekostengesetz, the German Federal Travel Expenses Law, work? What funding opportunities exist and which funding instruments are suitable for my concept?

Space for Reflection: Dealing with the Highs and Lows of Everyday Life as an Artist

This seminar, in both individual work and in group work, is dedicated both theoretically as well as practically to topics surrounding uncomfortable feelings such as, for example, shame, the urge for perfectionism, comparisons, blocks, standing in your own way or the perception of having to make your way through a difficult and challenging time. How do I deal with these issues? How can I deal with them? We will work with the paradoxes of how the naming and addressing of feelings can lead to a healthy attitude toward and acceptance of yourself and thus can become a new motor for your own creativity.

Space for Possibilities: Networks and Distribution

What opportunities are there for me to present my work at other locations in Germany and abroad? What strategies can I develop to generate interest about my work with other presenters and producers? What venues and festivals are the ones that are most relevant for me? How do I network myself nationally and internationally in order to find co-producers and partners and why do I want to do that? What networks, platforms, open calls and funding opportunities are out there and how do I get started?

The Seminar Leaders

Eva Hartmann is a mentor, coach, moderator, mediator, instructor and trainer, amongst other roles, for young artists and producers, groups and teams. She holds an MA in theater studies and has completed further education courses as an accredited relational dynamics coach, Gestalt coach, trauma-informed coach and is a freelance dramaturg in Berlin. She worked as a producer and manager for a variety of artists and festivals including, amongst others, Internationale Theater-Akademie Ruhr, Bochum and the performanc festival reich & berühmt from 1999 to 2023. She was the company, funding and strategy manager for the German/English artist collective Gob Squad from 2002 to 2023 and was a member of the board of LAFT Berlin in 2009 and 2010.
She has accompanied transformation processes in different contexts, including at schools and universities and at cultural and social organizations and institutions. More and more, she is finding herself interested in how we live, work and are connected with ourselves and others as well as how we communicate and act. How does the manner and way in which we do these things embody our value system and, at the same time, serves as a motor for change?

Christina Runge lives in Berlin and works there and elsewhere as a freelance dramaturg and producer. She worked as an assistant director and dramaturg at the Prater of the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin from 2002 to 2005 and was involved there in theater productions and film projects by René Pollesch, Stefan Pucher, Schorsch Kamerun, Jan Ritsema, Tim Staffel, Lorenz/Kuster/Boudry and hangover ltd. Since 2006, she has worked on a freelance basis in the areas of performance, audio plays and films with, amongst others, the German-British artist collective Gob Squad, hangover ltd., Interrobang, Lindy Annis, La Hengst / Müller-Klug, Masha Qrella and Schorsch Kamerun.
She develops and realizes programming concepts and curates projects at, amongst other institutions, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. Together with Andreas Kebelmann, she realized the radio feature Was uns bleibt, sind Möglichkeiten (What Remains Are Options) (NDR, 2014). Since 2006, she has also made presentations and given workshops in, amongst other places, Alexandria, Egypt, Berlin, Hildesheim, Leipzig and Manchester, Great Britain.

Katja Sonnemann is the initiator and director of AKADEMIE für Performing Arts Producer und freie Produzentin (the academy for performing arts producers) as well as an independent producer, instructor, mentor and adviser. Following her studies in applied theater studies in Gießen, she worked, amongst other posts, as the tour manager for Sasha Waltz & Guests and as the director of the artistic administration office of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. After this, she was director of the production development of the 2005 edition of the festival Theater der Welt in Stuttgart and head scheduler at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater Berlin from 2006 to 2009. From 2010 to 2012, she worked as the company manager (temporary parental leave replacement) and an independent producer for Rimini Protokoll and as the company manager of andcompany&Co from 2012 to 2017. She is part of the agency Wilson*Borles Arts Management, which works under a framework agreement for the German Federal Cultural Foundation. She offers workshops and seminars in the performing arts (PAP Berlin, the Ernst Busch Academy of Performing Arts, the German Federal Cultural Foundation, Kulturförderpunkt and others) and advises national and international artists and companies. She is a member of IETM, LAFT and ITI Germany.
