Panel Discussion: The "Larger Form" in Dance and Music Theater
The question regarding the "larger form", which has been present in debates regarding contemporary dance for quite some time, is dealt with in very different manners in choreographic approaches. In doing so, it is not solely a matter of performing on large stages while using all theatrical means; less obvious aspects are dealt with at the center of the discussion. A "larger form" is also demonstrated in the continuity of an artistic signature, by working with an idea over the course of multiple productions or by using participative formats that integrate the audience.
During the panel discussion, these practices in dance will be addressed and compared with aesthetic/conceptual approaches towards the "larger form" in the field of music theater. What tendencies and visions exist here?
The representatives of both genres will ask themselves the following questions, amongst others: Do artists have utopian thoughts that extend beyond the framework of project funding pragmatism? Is there a "crisis of the larger form" or is the desire for larger-scale productions a need of presenters and producers that is imposed upon the art externally?
The range of artistic considerations and (infra)structural possibilities will be reflected upon critically in the discussion.
Moderated by Professor Susanne Foellmer, the panel participants include: Cristina Ciupke, Jutta Hell (Rubato), Nir de Volff, Oliver Proske (Nico & the Navigators), Sven Holm (NOVOFLOT).
